The Journey of Gracist: Faith, Fashion, and Grace
Stephen Jenkins, Creative Cohort | February 10, 2025
Stephen Jenkins, founder of Gracist Brand Clothing, has created more than just a fashion label; he’s built a movement rooted in faith, grace, and community. His journey, shaped by personal challenges and deep faith, led him to create a brand that tells powerful stories of authenticity and healing.
It all started with the painful word “racist,” which became a turning point in Stephen’s life. This moment inspired a transformative trip to Africa, where Stephen experienced a profound sense of purpose and realized a calling: to create a brand not just about clothing, but about grace. “In Africa, I learned what it means to be seen for who I am, not just for what I do,” he reflects.
Growing up in New York City, fashion was Stephen’s tool of self-expression. Raised in a large family by a single mother, fashion became his way of communicating confidence and resilience. Later, his passion shifted toward faith and theology, which merged with his fashion background to shape his brand philosophy: fashion tells a story about who we are and what we value.
At the heart of Gracist is a commitment to people over possessions. Stephen learned in Africa that relationships, not things, define our legacy. “People’s last words are never about what they owned, but who they loved,” he shares. This lesson became the cornerstone of his work, where each piece of clothing is a symbol of grace and collaboration.
The brand is more than just clothing; it’s about community. Through partnerships with artisans like Elijah, a Muslim craftsman, Stephen has discovered the power of collaboration and mentorship. He believes in building something greater by combining unique gifts, empowering others, and creating lasting change.
Gracist is a legacy of grace, authenticity, and shared stories. Every garment carries the imprint of someone’s journey, a reflection of their identity and the grace they carry. Stephen’s belief is simple: “Brokenness is where the light gets out.” Through life’s challenges, we find the places where grace shines the brightest.
As you reflect on Stephen’s story, consider how your faith and work intersect. How can grace shape who you are, not just what you do? We invite you to support Gracist and its mission. Together, we can make a lasting impact and build a legacy of grace.
